Revolv make me feel like I’ve Devolved. I placed an order for this a month or so before it became available. I’m a Prime member with free two day shipping and a great love for home automation. The day it arrived I went onto Amazon to see the final description since the pre-sale information described Revolv as the end all, be all in home automation control. I was very suspicious when I saw all of the 5 star reviews on a product that arrived to me not more than two days after its release. My suspicions were confirmed after I experience the Revolv for myself. The set up would be very simple it worked. It finally found some of my devises like my Nest thermostat and my Sonos Playbar, but that’s about it. It would not find the other devices like my Yale door locks, lighting control, or security alarm. As mentioned in the newly posted description Revolv is very limited in the devises it works with. The Revolv app operation with my Nest and Sonos Playbar is extremely limited. Revolv provided basic device operation but I found the apps that came from Nest and Sonos provided simpler, more in-depth control. I guess what it is trying to do is give you one app that allows you to control your devices without opening the individual apps for each device. So maybe they are saving me a button press or two for basic operation but that is it. For $300.00 I will keep all of my control apps in one folder on my iPhone and keep using the full featured apps supplied with the device for free. I’m sending Revolv back where it came from for a full refund.

The top Home Automation devices i have used was Revolv and Staples Connect Hub… both work very well. However the Staples has both support for IO S and Android Apps,, While the Revolv currently only supports IO S,, and no Android. So unless your using a Iphone or Ipod Touch,, it wont work.

Both have devices you can use to incorporate your zwave devices into play… however for now whatever is on the Revolv app for adding devices,, if you dont see what your adding currently then you cannot add them as there is no manual add devices to sync to the hub,, at least for now.. I was informed by Revolv more and more devices will be added to the hub weekly.

The Staples however,, what is currently on there list of devices as well as you can manually add Home Automation devices to the hub so your not left without using your device.

Overall even thought there isnt a Android app yet for the Revolv,, i will stick with them,,, they seem to be in tune with Home Automation,,, they have had 4 updates already to the app.. and 2 major firmware updates to their hub which shows consistency and future proofing there hub.

Great device, software works but is limited, great potential., December 5, 2013

This is a great little piece of hardware. It was easy to setup and it found my hue devices, my z-wave switches and my insteon switches. I am excited to find out what other devices and protocols they will support when all the radios are on. However the 4 star rating is intended for those who a)like to tinker and b)who don’t mind beiong on the leading edge and shaping a product. Why?

Firstly it doesn’t support enough devices yet (like schlage locks) and the depth of functionality for many supported devices is minimal. For example only controlling a small subset of sonos, z-wave switch, and lock functions.

Secondly and a bigger issue is the software. It does what it says it does and does it well (add devices, turn devices on / off, make basic actions). However it is not ready for full house automation – for example a single page of devices and actions is not scalable. It needs room groupings, it needs ‘if then’ actions. It needs to be smarter like when I linked an insteon sensor to a hue light and automatically turned the light on. It never turned the light off when the sensor was not detecting. Now given their excellent support, enthusiasm and last round of funding I am sure these guys have the potential to get there. But it is early days.

Bottom line I am super happy with my purchase but recommend folks go in with eyes wide open – it doesn’t have the richness that anyone experience in HomeLinc or MiCasa will be looking for. For someone new it is a great way to get started and be sure you are not locked into just one set of device protocols.
